Recreation Summer Staff Positions
The following are positions that the Recreation Department typically has open each summer. If you are interested in more than one of the positions listed, be sure to note this on the application form. Candidates must be at least 16 years old as of May 31st. Club Simonds Leader (7 weeks plus orientation)
A day program (Monday-Friday) for children in grades K-4. Applicants should have an interest in working with elementary age children and the ability to lead a variety of recreational activities. Applicants should have a general knowledge of arts and crafts, group games, special events, and sports. Applicants should also be outgoing and able to relate with children.
Outdoor Adventure Leader (7 weeks plus orientation)
Outdoor Adventure is a program for young people in grades 4-9 offered in one-week sessions, Monday through Friday. An overnight campout is scheduled each week, as well as several day trips. Applicants should have an interest in the outdoors and experience in activities such as camping, hiking, mountain biking, canoeing, nature studies, environmental education, etc.
Park Place: Director, Leaders (7 weeks plus orientation)
Supervised parks offer activities for children grades K-5 on a drop-in basis. Staff members should be able to work with children of various ages and should be able to lead a variety of activities, such as arts & crafts, group games, special events, sports, skits, etc.
Mini Sports: Leaders (7 weeks plus orientation)
The Mini Sports Program is offered Monday –Friday for children ages 4 – Grade 1. Candidates should have a strong sports background and knowledge of sports such as basketball, baseball, soccer, softball.
Summer Discovery Leader (7 weeks plus orientation)
This program is for 3-5 year olds (children who have not yet attended kindergarten) and is offered Monday -Friday. This program includes a variety of activities such as arts & crafts, group games, singing, and story-telling. Applicants should have experience working with young children and knowledge of arts & crafts, games, story-telling, singing etc.
Gymnastics Instructor (3 weeks plus orientation)
The gymnastics program is held Monday-Thursday at Burlington High School during July and August. The gymnastics program is open to boys and girls in grades 1-12. Applicants must have substantial experience in gymnastics and ability to teach young people of various ages.
Inclusion Support Staff (schedule varies)
Inclusion support staff are primarily responsible for working in a 1:1 or 1:2 setting with a child with a disability. Their goal is to integrate the participant into our programs. This position requires the ability to be creative In the integration, and have good character, integrity, adaptability, and be enthusiastic, friendly, and dependable. Leaders must have an ability to work independently and in a variety of environments. A varied work schedule is expected. Activities may include games, arts and crafts, athletics, camping, swimming, singing, and trips.
Youth Tennis: Director, Instructors (7 weeks plus orientation)
The Youth Tennis program held at the Rahanis Playground tennis courts.
Applicants must have substantial tennis experience and the ability to teach tennis skills to children of various ages.
Wading Pool: Supervisors
Supervisors oversee Burlington’s wading pool at Simonds Park (lifeguard certification is not required). The pool is open 7 days a week during June, July and August. Supervisors are assigned to work morning and afternoon shifts. Applicants must have the ability to communicate effectively with children and adults.
People with recreation leadership and/or teaching experience may qualify for a position as a summer program director. Please let us know if you wish to apply for a director position.
