Assistant to the Children's Librarian

The Burlington Public Library takes pride in the innovative services, programs and materials that it provides to its community.  Conveniently located 14 miles northwest of Boston and easily accessible from Route 95/128 and Route 3, Burlington is home to 26,000 residents and a robust collection of businesses.  This vibrant community welcomes approximately 150,000 people per day to work, eat, and shop.  Under the general supervision of the Children’s Librarian, this position is responsible for providing patrons with the highest quality of service and programming by staffing a busy public desk within the Children’s Department.

Major duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Provide reference, circulation, and reader advisory services to patrons in the Children’s Department
  • Assist in developing and conducting programs and group visits
  • Create publicity, book lists, and other promotional materials
  • Provide general support for the Children’s Librarian
  • Other duties related to the primary scope of the position
 
Recommended minimum qualifications include
  • Masters of Library Science degree preferred, or in progress to obtain
  • 2 years of library experience, preferably in a Children’s Department
  • Computer skills and flexibility to adapt to constantly changing technology
  • Excellent customer service skills

This is a part time position, 20 hours per week.
Hours are Monday 10am-2pm, Wednesday 3:15-9:15pm, and Thursday 3pm-8pm, and Friday 10am-3pm; the schedule includes one Saturday in a four-week rotation, from 9:45am-5:15pm with hours reduced during the regular work week to accommodate.  Opportunity to work Sundays and summer Saturdays as overtime shifts.

This is a union position within the Burlington Municipal Employees Association bargaining unit.  Salary is within Grade 6 of the BMEA contract. 

Pay range starts at $27.84/hr with the opportunity to advance to a max rate of $38.93/hr through annual increases, and includes comprehensive and generous benefits.
