Assistant Conservation Administrator

Burlington, MA
Conveniently located 14 miles northwest of Boston and easily accessible from Route 95/128 and Route 3, Burlington is home to over 250 acres of permanently protected areas of natural open space.  The Assistant Conservation Administrator assists in administering and enforcing the Wetlands Protection Act and Stormwater Bylaw, conducts site inspections, develops and administers land conservation and management programs, writes and administers grants, and serves as project coordinator for the EPA NPDES Phase II Stormwater Permit.
 
Essential functions include, but are not limited to:
  • Assist Conservation Administrator in regulatory review & permitting of projects under MA Wetland Protection Act, Burlington Wetland Bylaw, and Burlington Stormwater Bylaw
  • Assist in field reviewing of wetland delineations and erosion control installations
  • Coordinate Town NPDES Phase II stormwater permit
  • Assist in land management activities, including recruiting & overseeing volunteers and organizing events & activities
  • Utilize GIS for mapping and maintain department’s GIS database
  • Assist residents and others with questions on floodplains, wetlands, and permitting
  • Attend Conservation Commission meetings; participate in public hearings
  • Advise Planning Board, Select Board and others on environmental issues
 
 
Minimum qualifications include
  • Bachelor’s Degree in environmental science, natural resources, earth or soil sciences, or related field
  • Experience in conservation or environmental activities
  • Experience with stormwater regulations and GIS preferred
  • Working knowledge of botany, hydrology, soil conditions, engineering and wildlife
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills
  • Strong verbal, writing, and computer skills
  • Valid driver’s license

This is a non-union position.  Salary is within Grade 10, of the Administrative & Professional Compensation Plan, offering annual increases via step system.  Pay range starts at $61,957 with the opportunity to advance to a max rate of $84,480.  Starting rate is competitive and dependent upon experience, and includes comprehensive and generous benefits.
