Senior Civil Engineer

Reporting to the Town Engineer, this position is responsible for development of plans and specifications for municipal procured construction projects, field inspection/supervision, and contracts administration, as well as technical and supervisory work in assisting the Town Engineer carry out the functions of the engineering department.  Position requires knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering, particularly as applied to municipal infrastructure, excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, and the ability to work well with the public.

Essential functions include, but are not limited to:
  • Design, permitting, and inspection of Municipal Infrastructure projects.  Prepare bid specifications and documents and other technical material required to implement the project.
  • Perform field inspections of and surveys.
  • Maintain records and reports relating to inspection and maintenance of engineering projects. 
  • Prepare and draft materials in graphic form including official roadway and zoning maps, construction plans and details, site plans, and visual aids for oral presentations.
  • Review plans and specifications for municipal construction contracts.
  • Provide technical advice to Town staff, Boards and Commissions, and public.
  • Answer and investigate complaints concerning the public works services, traffic issues, drainage, and road maintenance.
 
Minimum qualifications include
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, along with 5 years of design and/or field construction experience, or any equivalent combination of education and experience; prior municipal engineering experience desirable. 
  • EIT or SIT certificate and valid driver's license.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering as applied to municipal infrastructure, excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, and the ability to work well with the public.

Preferred Qualifications: Business computer applications (Word, Excel, Access), CAD design, GPS/Total Station/Data Collector, GIS computer mapping, Engineering Design Software.

Full time position, 40 hours per week within the Burlington Municipal Employees Association bargaining unit.  Pay range at Grade 11 starts at $40.47/hr with the opportunity to advance to a max rate of $57.82/hr through annual increases, and includes comprehensive and generous benefits and opportunities for overtime.
