Assistant Town Administrator

The Town of Burlington seeks internal application from experienced municipal leaders for the position of Assistant Town Administrator, to join the team responsible for the management and operation of the Town.  With an operating budget of $176 million and AAA bond rating, the administration’s primary goal is to provide quality service at the best value to the taxpayer.  The successful candidate will be a strategic and motivated professional who enjoys public service and who has the capacity to build trust, including outstanding interpersonal and communications skills, honesty, flexibility, and a proven ability to develop and maintain lasting relationships. 
 
Essential functions include, but are not limited to:
  • Assist the Town Administrator in executing the strategic direction of the Town of Burlington and overseeing and managing day-to-day service delivery.
  • Supervise senior staff members in partnership with the Town Administrator.  Directly supervise all staff in the Town Administrator’s Office.
  • Develop and recommend to the Town Administrator policies regarding Town-wide administration, establish procedures to implement policies, and monitor the efficacy within the Town departments.
  • Drive strategic initiatives including short and long term fiscal and operational planning.
  • Identify and respond to community and Select Board issues, concerns and needs.
  • Direct financial operations for the town, serve as liaison to the Ways & Means Committee, and serve as principal negotiator for the Town in collective bargaining with government employee unions. 
  • Act in the absence of the Town Administrator.
 
Minimum qualifications include
  • Bachelor’s in Public Administration, Business Administration, or related.  Master’s desirable
  • Minimum 10 years of progressively responsible municipal management experience
  • Capacity to build trust among internal and external constituents
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communications skills, honesty, flexibility, and the ability to develop and maintain lasting relationships
  • Knowledge of local government operations, labor relations, and municipal laws
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills


The Town Administrator will negotiate a highly competitive salary and benefits package that is competitive and considerate of the candidate’s experience and qualifications.  Starting rate is in accordance with the Personnel Rules & Regulations.
