Administrative Assistant I

Reporting to the Town Engineer, the Administrative Assistant I performs secretarial work in supporting the activities of the Department of Public Works Engineering office.

Essential functions include, but are not limited to:
  • Receive and respond to telephone and in-person inquiries on varied issues. 
  • Provide assistance to contractors, realtors, surveyors and residents searching for water, sewer, site and subdivision plans.
  • Assist in maintaining the Engineering Division budget.
  • Maintain records of sewer, water and drainage facilities, roadways and location of utilities.
  • Input and maintain in database and/or GIS format: the plan imaging system, utility permitting, other Town infrastructure records, and Division web page.
  • Maintain accurate departmental records and filing systems. 
  • Prepare and maintain forms, reports, correspondence and related information for office.
  • Perform clerical duties including processing departmental mail, and scanning documents.
  • Process invoices and payments for the department.
Minimum qualifications include
  • High school diploma with 2-3 years’ related experience.  Associate’s degree preferred.
  • Clerical and financial skills.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Must be able to function effectively and efficiently in a multi-disciplined and dynamic work environment.
  • Must maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Proficiency in standard office computer applications including spreadsheet and database programs.
  • Ability to deal effectively with the general public, other departments and business representatives.
This is a union position within the Burlington Municipal Employees Association bargaining unit.  Salary is within Grade 6, of the BMEA contract.

Pay range starts at $29.53/hr with the opportunity to advance to a max rate of $42.20/hr via annual step increases.  This is a full time position, 35 hours per week, and includes comprehensive and generous benefits.
