Accounting Specialist

Burlington, MA
Working under the direction of the DPW Administrative Assistant, this position provides financial/clerical support the Department of Public Works and is responsible for all aspects of the department’s accounts payable process.

Essential functions include, but are not limited to:
  • Prepares vouchers and purchase orders, inputs invoices into Munis, and processes payments. 
  • Reconciles and maintains various accounts and financial records, prepares reports of operating budgets.
  • Researches and resolves issues, voids and reissues vendor checks, posts and updates general ledger.
  • Reviews compliance of contracts, monitoring of vendor invoices.
  • Assists the department in completing reports and projects.
  • Serves as backup for departmental payroll processing, water and sewer billing.
  • Prepares work orders for water and sewer appointments.
  • Maintains the backflow database as well as scheduling work orders.
  • Performs reclassification of expenses as needed.
  • Answers inquiries regarding trash collection, water bills and other department services.
Minimum qualifications include
  • High school diploma with courses in bookkeeping, accounting, or related; Associates Degree preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years of related experience. 
  • Superior and current computer skills, including record/database management and financial software.  Munis experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of accounting principles and procedures, and bookkeeping techniques.
  • Ability to learn specialized departmental software applications.
  • Exceptional communication, organizational and customer service skills. 
  • Must be able to function effectively and efficiently in a multi-disciplined and dynamic work environment.
  • Must maintain a high level of judgment and discretion.
This is a union position within the Burlington Municipal Employees Association bargaining unit.  Salary is within Grade 6A, of the BMEA contract. 

Starting salary is $30.58/hr. This is a full time position, 35 hours per week, and includes comprehensive & generous benefits.
