Senior Collector

The Senior Collector performs skilled accounting, clerical, and administrative functions in assisting the Deputy Treasurer Collector and Treasurer/Collector with daily operations, including supervising office staff. The position coordinates administrative services for the department, including customer service operations, office administrative and bookkeeping functions, purchasing and support for assigned special projects.

The Senior Collector exhibits superior customer service skills and serves as a model for the department. This position is expected to be a model for the experiences that residents, businesses, and visitors have when they engage with the Town of Burlington.
Examples of work include:
  • Administrative support and leadership for the Treasurer/Collector’s Office.
  • Receive and account for all tax payments and other municipal revenues received.
  • Assist taxpayers over the telephone, in writing, and in person.
  • Maintain records balance and deposit funds; produce bills and reports in the town’s enterprise resource management system.
  • Prepare legal notices of tax takings, demands for unpaid taxes, delinquency notices, and liens.
  • Serves as a backup to Payroll Administrator and provides assistance in payroll functions.
 
Minimum qualifications include
  • High school diploma with courses in bookkeeping and accounting practices. Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, or management. Experience and related education in a similar role may be substituted for education.
  • One to three years of experience in a setting managing accounts, budgets, or other office management functions; supervisory experience desirable.
  • Knowledge of basic accounting.
  • Ability to perform detailed work accurately and efficiently.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain budgeted accounts, financial records and clerical records.
  • Proficiency in standard office computer applications.
  • Ability to deal effectively with general public, other departments and business representatives.
This is a union position within the Burlington Municipal Employees Association bargaining unit. Salary is within Grade 8, of the BMEA Contract, offering annual increases via a step system.

The pay range for this position is $61,607 - $88,034 with an anticipated starting range of $61,607 - $70,306. This is a full time, onsite position, 35 hours per week, and includes comprehensive and generous benefits.
