Office Assistant

Burlington, MA · Administrative
Reporting to the DPW Director, the Office Assistant performs administrative and clerical work within the Department of Public Works Administrative office.

Essential functions include, but are not limited to:
  • Provides a variety of clerical and administrative duties in support of the office, requiring knowledge of departmental functions and ability to exercise independent judgement
  • Works directly with the general public and other municipal personnel
  • Greets visitors, answer telephone calls, explains procedures, and assists in filling out forms and applications
  • Directs inquiries to appropriate individuals, departments or vendors and assists the public with completing forms and applications
  • Generates and distributes correspondence, maintain files and records, sorts and processes mail, duplicate materials, and order supplies
  • Updates and maintains databases. Prepare forms, spreadsheets and other documents. Distribute material as required
  • Assists with preparation of agendas, informational packets and departmental materials
  • Collects, records and reconciles fees for departmental functions and services. Makes deposits and prepares related reports.
Minimum qualifications include:
  • High School diploma with 1-2 years of related experience
  • Proficiency with computer applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, email and internet. Ability to learn specialized departmental software applications
  • Ability to provide courteous public service, maintain confidentiality, manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and communicate effectively
  • Skills in customer service, public relations, interpersonal communications, record keeping and operating office and data processing equipment and software applications
 
This is a union position within the Burlington Municipal Employees Association bargaining unit.  Salary is within Grade 5, of the BMEA contract. 

Pay starts at $27.69/hr. This is a part time position, 30 hours per week, and includes comprehensive & generous benefits.
