Conservation Administrator

Burlington, MA
Conveniently located 14 miles northwest of Boston and easily accessible from Route 95/128 and Route 3, Burlington is home to over 250 acres of permanently protected areas of natural open space.  The Town of Burlington is seeking applicants for the position of Conservation Administrator to lead the Town’s conservation department, provide assistance to the Conservation Commission, and enforce the provisions of conservation and wetlands protection regulations.
 
Essential functions include, but are not limited to:
  • Plan, organize, direct, control and monitor the policies, priorities and activities of the Conservation Commission
  • Perform site review and investigation of applications to develop near town wetlands for potential impacts on the environment; make recommendations to the Conservation Commission
  • Manage and oversee environmental permitting under local wetland and stormwater bylaws, State wetland laws & regulations and Federal EPA stormwater laws ; initiate enforcement actions for wetlands infractions
  • Advises public on wetlands and floodplains laws and related environmental policies; oversee departmental public outreach and social media activities
  • Manage Town conservation areas and advise the Select Board on management of Landlocked Forest
  • Manage seasonal stream cleaning program
  • Administer and manage office operations
  • Develop and manage departmental budget and financial resources
  • Attend Conservation Commission meetings; participate in public hearings
  • Advise Planning Board, Select Board and others on environmental issues
 
 
Minimum qualifications include
  • Bachelor’s Degree in environmental science, natural resources, earth or soil sciences, or related field.  Master’s degree desirable
  • Minimum 5 years of responsible experience in conservation or environmental activities
  • Conversant and knowledgeable of MA Conservation Law
  • Environmental permitting experience
  • Working knowledge of botany, hydrology, soil conditions, engineering and wildlife
  • Excellent management, communication, and customer service skills
  • Valid driver’s license

This is a non-union position.  Salary is within Grade 13, of the Administrative & Professional Compensation Plan, offering annual increases via step system.  Pay range starts at $78,929 with the opportunity to advance to a max rate of $107,621.  Starting rate is competitive and dependent upon experience, and includes comprehensive and generous benefits.
